February 21, 2007 - House Fire
A home was completely engulfed in fire February 21, 2007 near the 4900 South block of the Ben Lomond subdivision. The fire was reported to 911 Dispatch shortly after 10:02pm with fire units from South Ogden Station 81 and 82 paged to respond. Additional fire units from Ogden Fire Station 5 and Weber Fire District Station 64 were also paged with first-in
units arriving on scene at 10:06pm.
On arrival, crews were met with a fully involved house fire that was potentially threatening homes directly to the north and south of the structure. South Ogden Police Department personnel ensured everyone in the adjacent homes were evacuated and safe as well as confirming that the occupant of the involved home was accounted for and uninjured. One person was home asleep at the time the fire occured and was alerted by his dog's barking. The homeowner reportedly went downstairs and discovered a fire growing in the living room area. He was able to get himself out of the home with some minor smoke inhalation, unfortunately his dog "Sparky" was not able to escape.
Fire crews initially focused their efforts towards protecting the threatened homes and reducing the threat to other exposures. Due to the size and intensity of the fire, crews predominantly confined their attack to a defensive, outside assault. With the high likelihood of the fire having compromised the structural integrity of the home, Firefighters' efforts of going inside to hit hotspots were kept to a minimum. "Knock down" of the fire was achieved approximately 20 minutes into the fire with continued efforts made towards extinguishing flare ups.
The incident was stabilized in approximately 1 hour with a "fire watch" crew remaining on scene the rest of the night to deal
with additional flare ups. An investigation into the cause of the fire began in the light of day with investigator representatives from South Ogden Fire Department and the Utah State Fire Marshal's Office.
The fire was determined to be caused by a cigarette not completely extinguished and left smoldering in / around combustible materials. Evidence indicates that the fire was smoldering and given a one hour "head start" before it was noticed and reported to 911 Dispatch.
