SOFD provides a full range of Fire Protection services primarily through the staffing of two fire stations within City limts. Each fire station is staffed with a minimum of 3 personnel, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year. SOFD currently has on staff 33 combat operations and fire support personnel with various certifications as required by their specific position descriptions. The following is a list of minimum training and certification with a brief description of the requirements;
Basic Firefighter - Prior to being hired, individuals are tasked with accumulating training hours to achieve a Utah State Firefighter I Certification. This training includes all required curriculum and manipulative skills objectives as outlined in the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) training standard 1001 for firefighters. State Certification requirement is a minimum of 108 hours of structured class and manipulative skills training as well as passing all related skills testing.
Advanced Firefighter - All members of the South Ogden City Fire Department are required to be at the advanced / Firefighter II level within 18 months of hire. Training for Firefighter II Certification goes beyond level I by more deeply exploring the science behind fire behavior, building construction, advanced rescue systems, fire protection systems...just to name a few. The State Certification includes the same minimum of training hours and testing to include more advanced manipulative skills testing.
Apparatus Driver / Operator - All fire apparatus drivers for SOFD are required to receive minimum training of vehicle operation prior to driving and operating fire department vehicles. Training includes comprehensive classroom instruction designed to educate the student on all aspects of fire apparatus to include pre-service inspection, component recognition, minor maintenance, manipulative skills driving, pump operation and hydraulics, troubleshooting, systems familurization and operation as well as tactical vehicle operation. Structured training includes a minimum of 72 hours instruction and 20 hours vehicle familurization. There are separate State Certifications for pumping and aerial apparatus.
Fire Officer - State Fire Officer certifications are a requirement of SOFD for members assigned supervisory roles within the department. Training includes formal classes / courses designed to prepare experienced Firefighters as leaders during day to day operations as well as management of fire and medical incidents. Structured training includes approximately 90 hours of instruction and scenario based simulations. State Certification includes subjects related to Managing Company Tactical Operation, Leadership / Supervision, and Communication.
